Florida, a state so big that it requires a full day to drive from end to end, has not many culinary claims to fame. Sure, there is a Cuban sandwich that both Jasons Deli menu 2020 claim responsibility for popularizing in the united states, but besides that, it is pretty barren. You’re not going to find a famed plate of pasta in Pensacola, and nobody visits Fort Lauderdale for the fried chicken.
There is one food item, however, that Florida does better than some other state: The grocery store sub. But not just any supermarket is going to do — these sandwiches has to be purchased from Publix, the beloved supermarket chain headquartered within the town of Lakeland. While a sub is a type of sandwich you will get virtually around the globe, Floridians love the Publix sub just as much as their college football teams, Pitbull, and air conditioning in a particularly humid summer. The most fervent of sub eaters actually have a nickname for their favorite sandwich: “the Pub Sub.”
“Publix was my family’s supermarket associated with preference growing up in Miami,” says Justin Taylor, a Florida-raised writer who always will make a stop at one of many state’s nearly 800 stores when he dates back to visit his in-laws in Pensacola and grandparents in Boynton Beach. Although I didn’t mature with Taylor or perhaps in Florida (I lived there briefly within my 20s), he’s element of a network of individuals who I find myself exchanging pictures of my personal favorite Pub Subs with regularly, like we’re grandparents gushing about grandkids or war buddies referring to the existing days. “Lately I’ve delivered to picking one high on my method to the airport when I’m leaving and so i have something good to consume [on the] plane,” Taylor says.
Taylor isn’t alone in his obsession. In addition Publix subs have their own Facebook page, particular varieties also provide their own dedicated fan pages. So what makes these supermarket subs so excellent? Like so much of the culture and the residents in Florida, the sub (or hero, or grinder, or anything you decided to refer to it as) migrated down south from the east coast. There exists nothing about a sub from Publix that would cause you to immediately think of palm trees and pink flamingos; you can find no substances that are unique towards the Sunshine State.
You will get the house deli meat, or you can pay a little bit more and obtain cuts through the Ny-based Boar’s Head. The bread, while baked on-site, is just a good version of crusty white sub bread. The vegetables, all chopped xgzfua from your grocer’s produce aisle, is your standard gamut of options that can be found at any Subway: lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, green peppers, onions, black olives.
The sandwich will not be fancy, but which is precisely the appeal. As opposed to being showy, they may be always high-quality and reliable. The ingredients are usually fresh and “much better compared to what they must be with a supermarket,” says Castillo. No matter what location you get to, the result is a large and filling sandwich for under a $10 bill in most cases.
It’s also highly customizable. Desire a warm turkey sandwich with provolone, Jasons Deli breakfast, and a smattering of olives? You may have that. Want to buy on whole wheat and stacked with tomatoes and jalapeos? That will happen, too. And in case you are feeling just a little adventurous there will always be the subs created in honor of the four local NFL teams just like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sub that comes topped with plantain chips and guacamole. Many people, however, in accordance with Maria Brous, Publix’s director of media and community relations, go for the chicken tender sub — an option you certainly will not find at Subway.
